Weston, MA Culverts Receive State Funding for Replacement

An existing, undersized culvert under Stony Brook.

Our firm engaged with the Town of Weston, MA, and the Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) to provide field data collection and preliminary design services to support two culvert replacement projects along Stony Brook. The Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration (MassDER) recently selected the Stony Brook projects for funding under the Culvert Replacement Municipal Assistance grant program, as well as the Culvert Replacement Training Site Initiative, reflecting the site’s regional ecological and community benefits.

Stony Brook is part of the Charles River watershed, largely residing within the towns of Weston and Lincoln. Previous assessments indicated that the existing culverts were undersized, providing little to no aquatic organism passage and restricting flow.

During the field data collection phase, our team will gather information on existing conditions, identify environmental resource areas, perform geotechnical borings, and develop conceptual designs for culvert replacement alternatives in accordance with Massachusetts River and Stream Crossing Standards guidelines. Our project team collaborated closely with the Town and CRWA to provide a scope of work and help craft a successful grant proposal.

Once complete, the project will help restore a Coldwater Fishery Resource (CFR) and provide passage for fish and other aquatic species, while also improving water quality and enhancing community resilience to the effects of climate change.
