Tighe & Bond Wins ACEC/MA Bronze Engineering Excellence Award for East Main Street Water Treatment Plant
Tighe & Bond, Inc. received the Bronze Engineering Excellence Award from The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) for our work on the East Main Street Water Treatment Plant in Middleborough, Mass. The annual awards recognize recent engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of merit, ingenuity, complexity, and client satisfaction.
The East Main Street Water Treatment Plant is a sustainable and economic project that reduces the levels of iron and manganese contaminants in the Town of Middleborough’s drinking water supply. Tighe & Bond provided the town with an innovative design that allowed for the application of biological filtration. This filtration process is a unique and relatively new water treatment technology application in the United States that does not use chemicals to filter out the iron and manganese.
The East Main Street Treatment Plant became the first Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) approved biological iron filtration system in Massachusetts to be placed into operation. Since the plant has been on-line, the Town has noticed a significant decline in water quality complaints and residents have commented on the noticeable improvement in their drinking water.
With the completion of this project, Tighe & Bond has now designed three out of the four operating biological water treatment plants in New England, providing more sustainable alternative solutions for water treatment. The project team will be honored at the next Engineering Excellence Awards gala in 2021.
