Proposed Federal Funding Earmarked for Northampton Pump Station

Proposed federal funding could provide support for additional improvements to water resource facilities in the Pioneer Valley once passed.

The Water Resources Development Act of 2024 (WRDA), a comprehensive biannual legislative package that provides for the conservation and development of water and related resources, was approved by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee in May and will appear before Senate members. The package included funding earmarked for several projects, including the Hockanum Flood Pumping Station in Northampton, Massachusetts that was one of several Western Massachusetts communities impacted by unprecedented rainfall and flooding last year.

Our engineers previously worked with the City of Northampton to evaluate and update design flows while accounting for climate change and increased rain intensity, among other improvements to electrical and mechanical pumps, HVAC, fire suppression, and fuel systems.

We are providing design, permitting, construction administration, and construction observation of the first phase of upgrades which are currently wrapping up. These upgrades include replacing all electrical equipment and underground fuel storage tanks. Future upgrades will include new pumps, diesel engines, trash rack replacement, and structural and architectural upgrades.
