Complete Streets Reconstruction

Our firm assisted the Town of Brookline, MA, by designing the Complete Streets rehabilitation of Washington Street. The design of the planned Washington Street improvements utilizes an approach which provides safe and accessible options for all travel modes – pedestrians, bicyclists, micro-mobility users, transit riders, public safety vehicles, and motorists.

The project covers approximately 1.3 linear miles of Washington Street, from Brookline Village up to and including its intersection with Beacon Street (Washington Square). This section of Washington Street connects to several key points in Brookline, including schools, police & fire stations, and Brookline Village.

This rehabilitation includes operational and safety improvements, multi-modal accommodations, roadway and sidewalk rehabilitation/reconstruction with ADA conforming wheelchair ramps, drainage improvements, improvements to traffic operations, new signs and pavement markings, pedestrian and streetscape enhancements, and related work. During this phase, our team coordinated with the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) on the consolidation of bus stops in the area.

In addition to providing design services, our firm assisted with securing funding from the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), and all work has been performed in conformance with the standards, policies, and procedures of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) which include Complete Streets and Healthy Transportation initiatives.
