Assessing Historic Buildings Using 3D Laser Scanning
The Town of Bolton engaged Tighe & Bond to evaluate the existing conditions of six key Town buildings and to develop a comprehensive Facilities Asset Management Plan that provides recommendations for improvements over a 10-year planning horizon. The interior and exterior scans were performed using 3D laser scanning technology to collect data on features of existing historical building.
The purpose of this assessment was to identify improvements, repairs, and upgrades at each building and prioritize those that should be completed. The assessment categorized repairs and upgrades which should be completed immediately, as well as those that should be completed over the next one to five years and six to ten years.
This project involved the assessment of Bolton’s Public Safety building (police and fire), the Old Fire Station, the Houghton Building (a historic building that served as Bolton’s high school in the 1800s), Town Hall, the Public Library, and the Department of Public Works.
Tighe & Bond assessed each building’s structure, site/civil-related systems and amenities, as well as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems. The interior finishes, as well as ADA accessibility, were also reviewed.
The Town of Bolton is now able to understand the needs of six important Town buildings and the financial impacts required over the next ten years to maintain or improve these facilities for use by Town staff and residents.
