Critical Safety Improvements for Schools and Communities

Our firm is assisting the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) with the design and implementation of critical Safe Routes to School (SRTS) improvements in communities across the state, including Agawam, Brookline, Gardner, Holyoke, Revere, Southampton & Watertown. The federally funded SRTS program aims to improve streets, sidewalks, and intersections to increase safe walking, biking, and rolling for elementary, middle, and high school students.

Gardner, MA: Elm Street School

Our Transportation team assisted MassDOT with final design and the preparation of construction documents for improvements to portions of Elm Street abutting the Elm Street School. The project included a new separated bike facility along the frontage of the school, new cement concrete sidewalks and ADA upgrades, the addition of on-street dedicated bicycle lanes, roadway resurfacing, and new pavement markings and ADA compliant crosswalks.

Revere, MA: Beachmont Veterans Elementary

This project will improve safety for students and residents who walk and bike in the Beachmont Neighborhood of Revere. The project will include upgraded sidewalks, curb ramps, and crosswalks within the project area roadways serving the elementary school. The project will also include the addition of a shared‐use path with new granite curbing, the addition of a raised crosswalk for traffic calming, and the installation of MUTCD compliant pavement markings and signage.

Agawam, MA: Maple Street Improvements

Our engineers designed improvements to Maple Street in Agawam, MA near Robinson Park Elementary School. The improvements to Maple Street include a new shared-use path with granite curbing, a raised intersection on the corner of Bridge and Maple Streets to promote traffic calming, and new accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists.
