Brewster Landing Honored with NAHB Platinum Award
Brewster Landing, a housing development that prioritizes integrated master planning and best practice design, has received a Platinum Best in American Living Award by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in the category of single-family community under 100 units. This residential cottage community is sited on 9.5 acres (two-thirds are preserved open space) just off Route 6A in Brewster, MA – an environmentally sensitive town that needed to increase its inventory of affordable housing options.
Tighe & Bond (work performed as Coastal Engineering Co. prior to acquisition) worked with Cape View Development and Union Studio Architecture & Community Design to develop an alternative housing product to the traditional stand-alone house. The result is 22 detached cottages and four cottage duplexes clustered around a common green that offer a small footprint, ideal for families looking to downsize and enjoy the maintenance conveniences associated with condominium-style living.
Our civil engineers provided the necessary level of protection for the nearby wetland areas by managing stormwater runoff utilizing the following Low Impact Development techniques:
- Compact land use patterns, including minimization of driveway width;
- Design of pervious patios;
- Utilization of bioretention basins and subsurface infiltration structures.
The development was permitted and constructed under the provisions of MGL Ch. 40B, with eight units awarded through a housing lottery to qualified buyers. Because these units enhance the town’s affordable housing inventory, this entire mixed-income neighborhood is a big asset to the surrounding community.
