On September 30, 2021, the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) held its annual Engineering Excellence Awards Gala. ACEC/MA held a joint virtual ceremony to honor all 2020 and 2021 award winners.
Project Managers Eric Ohanian, PE, and Daniel Roop, PE were honored as the 2020 and 2021 Young Professional of the Year respectively. This award recognizes the accomplishments of young engineers by highlighting their interesting and unique work, and the resulting impact on society.
Eric Ohanian has been a key contributor to the successful rise of Tighe & Bond’s bridge design and assessment practice over the last few years. His extensive experience and knowledge of engineering design have greatly contributed to the service we provide for our municipal and DOT clients including assisting numerous towns with applications for over $3 million in grant funding for bridges. His work extends far beyond bridge design and includes business development, project management, marketing, mentoring, and engineering.
Ohanian’s extensive volunteerism has led him to hold many leadership and committee roles with several professional organizations such as the Structural Engineers of Massachusetts (SEAMASS) and the Boston Society of Civil Engineers (BSCES). He started an annual Charity (Mini) Golf Tournament out of our Westwood, Mass. office to benefit the Greater Boston Food Bank. Ohanian then organized an outing to present the group donation and volunteer as a group at the food bank. They sorted 22,000 pounds of food to provide 15,000 meals to people across Eastern Massachusetts.
Since joining Tighe & Bond in 2012, Daniel Roop has become a standout leader amongst his peers, a top new-hire recruiter, and an integral part of our Water Business Line. As an environmental engineer, he specializes in coastal resiliency for water and wastewater infrastructure.
Roop is also known for his expertise in asset management within the engineering industry. During the past three years, he has helped fifteen communities to be successfully awarded the MassDEP & Massachusetts Clean Water Trust Asset Management Planning grant funds. This work resulted in over $1.4M in grant funding and $2M in project costs to help water, sewer, and stormwater entities transition from reactive operations and maintenance approaches to proactive ones driven by defensible risk-based capital planning decisions. He has worked with regulators to promote the AMP Grant Program, serves as Chair of NEWEA’s Asset Management Committee, presents at industry conferences and workshops, and is Tighe & Bond’s Asset Management Technical Specialist.
Roop has participated in seven Pan-Mass Challenges bicycle rides on Team Tighe & Bond, personally raising over $40,000 for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and is currently in training for his second Boston Marathon to support a Boston-based anti-bullying program.
