Designing Expansion of Tranquil Cemetery
With its dense woods and puddingstone outcrops, Walnut Hills Cemetery is a natural oasis that serves as an attractive area for walkers and birders. This attractive, town-owned cemetery was faced with diminishing burial space, which limited its continued viability.
The Town of Brookline hired our landscape architects to evaluate and explore previously unused areas of this historic 45-acre cemetery to extend its lifetime.
We developed concept plans for five areas and completed design and construction for one of those areas. The renovated space combines conventional casket burial with small square plots (three feet on a side) for the interment and memorialization of cremated remains.
