Award Winning First Step in Historic Mill Redevelopment
The HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital has been a long-standing fixture in Ludlow, providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services to western Massachusetts residents. The hospital was quickly outgrowing its space and needed to expand without leaving Ludlow. The Ludlow Mills Redevelopment complex, located mere blocks away on State Street, was an ideal location and provided the space HealthSouth needed to expand its services.
Designing with Purpose
In 2012, construction began on the new 53-bed state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital. Tighe & Bond, along with a team of other design professionals, provided engineering, permitting and construction services to Gresham, Smith and Partners and HealthSouth. The new hospital includes approximately 74,000 gross square feet of building space within a 9-acre parcel in the Ludlow Mills Redevelopment area.
The HealthSouth facility was the first step in a larger historic mill redevelopment project (Ludlow Mills). Design of the exterior and interior of the hospital included the re-use of historic building materials, such as bricks and wooden beams from the old mill buildings, and is a LEED Gold Certified hospital. Connected via walking paths to the Ludlow Mills Riverwalk along the banks of the Chicopee River, it provides outdoor rehabilitation opportunities for patients.
Services Snapshot
Our responsibilities for the project included site/civil engineering services associated with the development of the new hospital, as well as stormwater management design. We also provided permitting services for the project which included an Administrative Site Plan Review with the Town of Ludlow Administrative Review Committee – a committee founded specifically to streamline permitting procedures for projects located within the Ludlow Mills Redevelopment site.
