Environmental Services, Site/Civil Design for New Facility

The Connecticut Proton Therapy Center will be the first facility in Connecticut to use targeted radiological proton therapy to treat cancer, a treatment which is currently only available at a handful of facilities in the region. The Center is a collaboration between Yale-New Haven Health and Hartford HealthCare, partnering with developer Proton International. We assisted the project team by providing site/civil engineering, landscape architectural design, and environmental services.

Our work began with the environmental investigation of the site, which included the collection and analysis of soil and groundwater samples. The site had formerly been used as an agricultural facility for several decades, and the assessment determined the presence of impacted soils due to pesticide use. A management plan for the on-site relocation and capping of impacted soils was developed in unison with the site design, eliminating the need for disposal off-site.

We worked closely with Proton International and the Town Planning staff to develop the site plans for Planning & Zoning, Inland Wetlands and Watercourse Commission, and Department of Public Utilities approvals. Land-use plans included a site plan, grading plan, soil management plan, site utility plan, drainage and stormwater management plans, and landscape and lighting plan.

Our team designed the stormwater management plans to incorporate low-impact development techniques, such as above grade sand filters, infiltration chambers, deep sump catch basins, and oil/water/grit separators. The stormwater management design meets the Town and CT DEEP stormwater quality standards for attenuation of peak flows, volume reduction, and treatment. The project obtained Town land-use approvals and Aquifer Protection approval.

The Connecticut Proton Therapy Center is currently under construction. Once completed, the Center will improve access to an advanced form of cancer treatment for residents in Connecticut and throughout the region.
